Floor Restoration After a Slab Leak: Patching and Finishing
Fixing the pipe is half the job. The slab has to be patched and the floor finished, and matching what was there before is often the hardest part.
The order of work

- Pipe repaired and pressure tested
- Slab opening patched with concrete and allowed to cure
- Moisture checked and damaged materials removed
- Flooring repaired or replaced
- Baseboards, paint and cleanup
By floor type
| Floor | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Tile | Tiles removed over the area; matching old tile can be difficult, so ask whether spares exist |
| Hardwood or laminate | Damaged planks replaced; wet wood may need more removal |
| Carpet | Carpet and pad lifted and usually replaced in the affected area |
| Vinyl | Section replaced or the room re-laid for a clean match |
Who does the flooring
Many plumbers patch the concrete but do not install flooring. Ask before you sign whether flooring is included. See hiring a slab leak plumber.
Insurance and documentation
Keep photos of the floor before and after, plus receipts. Coverage for resulting damage may differ from coverage for the pipe. See slab leak insurance coverage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I avoid cutting the floor?
A reroute avoids the slab. See slab leak reroute.
How long before I can walk on the patch?
Ask your plumber about curing times for their patch.
Will tile match?
Maybe not exactly. Ask about spare tile and options before work starts.
Does flooring cost appear in the repair price?
Not always. Confirm what is included. See slab leak repair cost.
