Slab Leak Spot Repair: How It Works and When It Fits
A spot repair fixes one leak in one place. It is the most direct option when the leak is confirmed, the rest of the pipe is in good shape and the floor above is easy to patch.
What a spot repair is

A spot repair means opening the slab directly over the leak, cutting out the damaged section of pipe, replacing it and closing the floor again. It is one of four ways to fix a slab leak. Compare it with the others on our slab leak repair options page.
How a spot repair is done
- Confirm the location. Detection comes first, and two methods should agree. See slab leak detection.
- Protect the home. Furniture is moved or covered, and dust containment is set up where needed.
- Open the floor. The flooring and concrete over the leak are cut and removed in a small area.
- Repair the pipe. The damaged section is cut out and replaced, and the line is pressure tested.
- Close up. The opening is backfilled, new concrete is placed, and flooring is patched or replaced once the concrete has cured.
When a spot repair fits
- One confirmed leak
- Pipe that is otherwise in sound condition
- A floor that is easy to open and patch
- A tight budget and a plan to monitor the rest of the line
When to think twice
- Old pipe with several worn areas. A second leak may appear later, and each repair opens the floor again.
- Expensive finished floors. Matching tile or stone can cost more than the repair; a reroute may avoid the cut. See slab leak reroute.
- Repeated leaks. Compare repeated spot repairs with a whole-house repipe.
Older homes: test before you demolish
In older homes, some vinyl floor tiles and the adhesive under them can contain asbestos. Testing before demolition is a normal precaution. Ask your plumber how the floor above the leak will be tested and handled.
Cost and time
National contractor-cost data puts spot repair of a broken pipe under a slab at roughly $200 to $2,000, with the repair itself taking a few hours to three days (HomeAdvisor via Angi, April 2024). Local costs vary. See the slab leak repair cost guide and ask for your own price in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Will a spot repair leave a mark on my floor?
Usually yes. The patched area may not match the floor around it, especially with tile or wood in an older home. Ask what the plan for patching is and what is excluded.
How big is the hole?
It depends on the pipe depth and the repair. It is much smaller than the whole room, and the confirmed location is what keeps it small.
Can I walk on the repair right away?
Ask your plumber how long the concrete needs to cure and when flooring can go back. It depends on the materials used.
Does the repair come with a warranty?
Ask for the warranty in writing before work starts, including what it covers and for how long.
